FUNCTIONAL YOGA

Paul Grilley says, "everyone has a unique biology and biography". The bodies we inhabit and the stories we hold within us are absolutely unique to us. Therefore, how we experience the world and how we practice yoga will be different for each of us. 


Functional yoga respects, embraces and celebrates our differences.  This allows the practitioner the space and tools necessary to tailor their yoga practice to best serve them in the moment. With a focus on the target area/s or function rather than the aesthetic principle, functional yoga concerns itself with how our yoga feels on the inside, as opposed to how it looks on the outside, resulting in a practice that is both diverse and inclusive. 


All classes taught at Brave Fish Yoga are taught functionally and are open to all abilities, ages and bodies. It is our hope that everyone who joins a Brave Fish class will feel inspired to embrace and understand their anatomical uniqueness, cultivate the courage to investigate their own inner landscapes and explore the spiritual and social impact of this great practice.

YIN

A functional approach for every body. Applying gentle to moderate stress for extended periods of time, yin yoga is designed to target the connective tissues of the body; tendons, ligaments, fascia, bones, joints and joint capsules. With a strong focus on meditation, this practice offers us an introspective path to Self-awareness. Yin yoga gives us the time to step back from daily drama, judgement and external influences so we are able to cultivate a strong sense of internal literacy and an ability to navigate our own unique human architecture safely with compassion, curiosity and courage.

YIN

This invigorating practice embodies the essence of yang energy; active, dynamic and fiery. Using repetition and fluid movement, yang yoga builds muscular strength and endurance, improves balance, coordination and overall fitness. In order to honour the roots of the tradition, we blend the postural practice with the wisdom and philosophy of the pre-modern era to create a movement practice that is intentional, mindful and challenging. A practice which encourages us to recognise and embrace the unique contributions we can make in our communities and in the distant elsewhere.

YANG

This invigorating practice embodies the essence of yang energy; active, dynamic and fiery. Using repetition and fluid movement, yang yoga builds muscular strength and endurance, improves balance, coordination and overall fitness. In order to honour the roots of the tradition, we blend the postural practice with the wisdom and philosophy of the pre-modern era to create a movement practice that is intentional, mindful and challenging. A practice which encourages us to recognise and embrace the unique contributions we can make in our communities and in the distant elsewhere.

MINDFULNESS & MEDITATION 

Steadfast in the belief that the ultimate goal of yoga is self-mastery, meditation and mindfulness play a significant role in every Brave Fish class, workshop, retreat and training. Practices include but are not limited to; Buddhist Mindfulness Training, Chakra Meditation, Japa Mantra, and silent introspection. Taking a systematic approach to meditation we explore different styles in order to discover the meditation practices which are most effective for each individual. We see meditation as a calling to conscious unity and the pathway to liberation for all.
